In this paper a so-called situation assessment of accessibility issues in the Netherlands is presented. This analysis was performed as part of the `Accessibility in Perspective' project. The analysis describes the character and size of the accessibility related problems now and in the near future. The accessibility concept is placed in a somewhat wider perspective than usual. The accessibility problems are illustrated in terms of discrepancies between demand and supply, and the consequences of these discrepancies. Recent and expected developments in demand and supply and the consequences of discrepancies between both, are described. Based on these developments, some (new) starting points for new solution types are formulated. The analysis of the expected situation clearly shows that without specific policy measures, a high increase of the congestion levels on the trunk road network can be expected. A substantial reduction of these levels can be reached by implementation of all specific policy measures proposed until now, but serious negative effects will remain. The situation assessment was one of the basic elements for a government policy report that was presented to Parliament. In this report extra policy measures are proposed, that after full implementation, will further improve the accessibility of the economic centres and the so-called mainports in the Netherlands. (A)
