Abstract

This article researches the employment provision determinants at home and on the work floor in the Netherlands in the 1990s. Attention is therefore specially directed towards the presence of ICT equipment within people's homes. In the various random samples that were taken it was the precise timing of the work that was crucial as this links up directly with the home-work traffic flow. It would appear that the availability of ICT equipment expands the amount of work offered, particularly in the home environment. It is probable that such working from home does not replace the normal working hours done on the work floor but that telework instead takes place in the evenings and at weekends. During office hours the amounts of work done from home and away from home in fact compliment each other. However, outside of office hours this reinforcing effect disappears so that both types of employment sources come to substitute each other under the influence of ICT. This has consequences for home-work traffic movements. If people replace overtime away from home with overtime done at home then this can even intensify the afternoon rush hour since - due to the greater availability of ICT - more and more employees are being given the opportunity to do overtime work from home.
