The research on ignoring the red light by pedestrians will consist of three parts. In this preliminary report an observation study is described. The observation is done with a video recording system on a pedestrian crossing from which the traffic signals could be actuated by the pedestrian with the aid of push-buttons. The main purpose was to study which variables influence the ignoring of the red pedestrian signal and how many pedestrians cross the road when the light is red and how many pedestrians ignore the provision for crossing. Some of these variables are age, sex, physical condition, traffic control conditions, traffic concentration, waiting time, and environmental conditions.
