Abstract

Lack of Space in the Rotterdam Harbour Area: Multicriteria Analysis of Alternatives Rotterdam Harbour is one of the two mainports of the Netherlands and functions as the 'the gateway to Europe'. Furthermore, the harbour is important for the Dutch economy ; and contributes to the image of The Netherlands as a transport country. The growth of the harbour seems to be without limits and various scenarios of the Rotterdam Harbour Authority as well as from the Dutch Central Planning Bureau pointed out that space will scarce in the year 2020. This scarcity will be mainly present in the industrial core area of the Rotterdam Harbour. To solve this space problem for Rijnmond region the Dutch government defined the following objectives: ' a quality improvement of the economy and the quality of life in the Rijnmond region. This paper investigates the various alternatives to fulfil the above mentioned objectives. Not only a description of the various alternatives is given but, furthermore a multicriteria evaluation has been made by means of the Regime method. (Author/publisher)
