Abstract

A penalty points system was introduced in a number of countries: a. o. in the U. S. A., Australia, New Zealand and Japan. From the few data available on the effectiveness of this points demerit system, the effect on traffic safety cannot be shown. From data on the slight coherence between offences and accidents and the slight possibilities thereby to identify accident-prone drivers from these committed offences, one can expect from the introduction of a points demerit system only a slight contribution to traffic safety.
