Abstract
The average value of the road surface luminance is one of the four quality criteria for public lighting installations. A simple method is described by which the average luminance can be determined when data are provided of the lamps, the lanterns, the geometry of the installation and the reflection properties of the road surface. Furthermore it is indicated in which way an estimation of the reflection properties may be made when the composition of the surface is known.
