The HEUREKA 08 held in Stuttgart (Germany) on 5th and 6th March 2008 attracted 380 participants who attended plenary sessions and 36 presentations in parallel sessions the guiding theme being "Optimisation in Traffic and Transport". The topics on the agenda covered a wide range from planning methodologies over to newly developed procedures and methods for the operation of transport to end with already implemented projects. The presentations covered the individual motorized traffic, the public transport as well as multimodal approaches. The exhibition in which system developers and system providers along with consulters and universities presented their products and services served to enhance the issues covered in the presentations. The presentations were embedded in introductory and special lectures on different basic topics. It became apparent that the steadily increasing practical experiences and the prospering technical possibilities open new optimisation potentials that can only be exploited in an integrated and interdisciplinary approach.
