Abstract

It is quite common in the road freight industry to refer to the costs of accidents as only the repair or third party costs. However there are many other expenses associated with accidents which ought to be taken into account in a rational estimation of the total costs. It is the objective of this phase of the study to estimate the true costs of HGV accidents. The research aimed to explore the relation of these costs to any other related variable. A total of 20 companies were contacted to provide some detailed information on their company's HGV accident costs. Very few of the companies had records on all the information requested. Six companies responded and data on 433 accidents (which took place in 1990) were analysed.
