Abstract

High performance materials is an area of considerable interest to the international highway community. Like the United States, many countries experience the same difficulties with deteriorating infrastructures, decreasing budgets, and the need to improve their roadway systems to better serve their customers and their economy. High-performance materials offer hope in sustaining stronger and more durable infrastrucutre systems for all. Three types of materials curently being investigated are high-performance composites, high-performance steel, and high-performance concrete, with concrete being a step ahead of the other two. This paper will look at the use of these materials in bridge construction and the issues involved. (A)
