Abstract

A low-cost, fast, visually representative, and high performance road transport network simulation system called HIPERTRANS has become available for use in traffic management and control. The simulator has the capability of real-time interfacing to a range of urban traffic control (UTC) systems and can use traffic data on a given road network to predict the network's future traffic. The system's design is object-oriented and was achieved by re-engineering well-established dynamic road traffic models. It executes faster than real time on distributed processors; this high performance was achieved by applying a robust parallel programming methodology. The simulator contains a powerful graphical user interface for entering road network models and origin to destination flow data, configuring simulation runs, and visualising simulation results. The system provides helpful traffic diagnostic tools enabling motorists, local transport authorities, policy makers, consultants, researchers, and UTC manufacturers to gainfully exploit its traffic management functionality.
