Abstract

This paper is a report on the development of a high-accuracy traffic flow measuring device that uses image processing of images from visible-light cameras and infrared cameras for highly accurate measurement of traffic flow, and also a report on the measurement results obtained using this device. In order to perform elaborated system design for Advanced Cruise-Assist Highway Systems (AHS) services, it is essential to have actual data concerning individual vehicle behavior and traffic flow on the highway. The installation conditions of the device were collected into the operating manual. Together with the creation of this manual, measurement of traffic flow and the road environment on high-standard highways and ordinary roads was also carried out over a total of 98 days. The results were used as the basic data for the AHS simulator. Measurements of every type of traffic flow scene will also be conducted in the future, and these should contribute to AHS development.
