Abstract

High-pressure sodium lamps, one of the more important of recent developments in light-sources, provide reasonable efficacy and acceptable colour rendering. The author reviews the principles on which they work and the development which led to their commercial introduction, He describes the problems which have to be overcome in manufacture and the considerations which determine their adoption for lighting-schemes. He concludes with a glance at the promising future of these lamps.
