Abstract

This volume contains more than 45 papers which have been submitted by researchers in the field of transportation engineering from 4 continents to the international symposium on highway capacity, Karlsruhe, 24-27 July 1991. These papers deal with main subjects as diverse as freeway capacity and flow, capacity of signalized and unsignalized intersections, urban road systems, urban arterial and rural highway capacity, urban intersections, bicycles, and pedestrians. In almost all countries capacity and level of service are specified by standards and guidelines with the successive publications of the US Highway Capacity Manual holding a key position. As capacity and attainable level of service in traffic networks are important variables for allmost all tasks in the field of transportation this book is to assemble recent experience from research and practice as it bears on revision, adaptation, and further development of capacity and level of service considerations.
