Abstract

After a critical survey of the safety characteristics of the interstate and other highway systems, the objective was to identify those aspects of design and operation on facilities in various sections of the country, which could be improved to increase safety and the quality of traffic service. The principal conclusions are presented in two major subject areas: road design and appurtenances; and traffic operations.
