Abstract

A position paper developed from a draft advice note prepared by the Road Engineering and Environmental Division of the Highways Agency. This document discusses how the human processes involved in driving change with advancing age. It gives guidance on the design of new roads and management of existing roads, where particular consideration for older drivers could be needed. This is therefore intended to assist not only those involved in the design of new roads, but also those engaged on accident engineering and traffic management. Where reduced standards are being considered, this document gives information and advice that can be used in resolving choices for situations where older drivers would appear to form a significant proportion of the drivers at the site in question
