Abstract

This textbook is intended primarily for college courses in highway and transportation engineering, but includes material for the advanced student and practicing engineer. Research findings and studies not yet completed are included. Emphasis is placed on planning and design. Chapters are as follows: highway systems, organisations and associations; highway and urban transportation planning; highway economy; highway finance; highway surveys, plans, and computations; rights of way and other legal problems; driver, vehicle, and road characteristics; highway design; highway operations - traffic engineering; highway drainage; highways and the environment; highway subgrade structure; constructing the roadway; gravel and crushed rock roads - stabilized roads; base courses; macadam surfaces - macadam bases; bituminous pavements; portland-cement-concrete pavements; highway maintenance. A set of 176 problems is included. The specifications and legal requirements quoted relate mainly to the USA.
