The general publis is acutely aware of the seriousness of the highway traffic accident situation. While improvements are being made in vehicle design and driver attitudes that will improve safety, the highway engeneer has an additional opportunity to reduce accidents--by designing safety into the h ighwayo Highway design is an area that can be closely controlled so that it for- ces the driver to operate his vehicle more safely. In North Carolina much future hiBhway construction will be concerned with the four-lane divided type of highway, and this study is and investigation of the design features of this type of road and their relationship with accidents. Primar'ily this is a detailed investigation of adcidents occurring at median op~nigns or crossovers between intersections on rural divided highways without control of access.
