Highway Safety chief urges society to get tough with alcoholic driver.

Abstract

1 - Motor vehicle accidents killed 55,500 Americans last year, nearly four times as many as were killed in action in Vietnam. 2 - Alcohol, particularly its use by chronic alcoholics, is blamed for upward of 50 percent of the still rising traffic death toll. 3 - Acting Director of Highway Safety Bureau favours procedures under which doctors world report problem drinkers to license bureaus. 4 - Drastic action in many areas called mandatory to halve the slaughter on our street and highways by 1980.
