Abstract

In the light of the increasing number of road accidents occurring in Saudi Arabia, this paper considers some safety aspects to be taken into consideration in the design of roads and vehicles. Factors to be considered in the design of roads are outlined and issues specific to Saudi Arabia highlighted. The variation in safety standards for vehicles, use of seat belts and need for regular inspections are considered. The need for a safety awareness programme for drivers, pedestrians and animal owners is discussed. A list of recommendations is made to reduce road accidents. The author suggests that adherence to speed limits and the use of safety belts will have the most effect. Some statistics are provided for accident rates and causes of accidents in 1991.
