Abstract

Two (2) roadside warning systems for trucks are reviewed: the Automated Truck Rollover Warning System (ATRWS) and the Dynamic Downhill Truck Speed Warning System (DSWS). The Automated Truck Rollover Warning System is in operation at three (3) locations on the Washington, D.C. Beltway in Virginia and Maryland, and the Downhill Truck Speed Warning System is being tested at one (1) location in Colorado. The ATRWS instructs truck drivers by variable message signs (VMS) to reduce their speeds when their trucks exceed speed thresholds and are in danger of rolling over on a freeway ramp or roadway curve. The DSWS provides real-time safe descent speed calculations, and advises truck operators by variable message signs of variable message signs of the safe descent speeds prior to a steep downgrade. Both roadside warning systems are designed to reduce truck accidents, thereby saving lives and costs. (A)
