Abstract

The status of technology, legislation, and programs relating to environmental impacts of highways and traffic is reviewed. The major topics addressed are control of air, water, and noise pollution, the relation of highways to visual aesthetics, recreational and historical land, and ecology; pending national legislation on State land use programs; and programmatic implications of section 136 of the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1970.
