Abstract

A brief historical survey of alcohol, drugs and traffic safety is presented. In the latter half of the last century behavioural and biochemical technology began to emerge, affording objective research capabilities on alcohol and drug related problems. The new research capabilities were applied with increasing intensity, paralleling the growth of automobile density. Countermeasures were introduced but these seem to be out of date now and new ideas are now required.
