Abstract

"Piggyback", the popular name for trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC) movement, has been one of the greatest technological innovations in land transportation of recent years, although the idea is not of recent origin. Piggyback development represents an attempt on the part of the railroads te bolster their declining revenues and to reclaim traffic lost over the last few years to the trucking industry. It represents an example of coordination of transport facilities, route and rates.
