Abstract

New Zealand has long been at the forefront of chipsealing technology in the international arena. In 1935 New Zealand's F.M. Hanson was the first to present a scientific approach to the design and construction of chipseals. The principles presented by Hanson promoted a rational approach to chipsealing that remained unchallenged for the next fifty years. In 2005 the New Zealand chipsealing industry took a new snapshot of the current state of the art regarding chipseals. The Chipsealing in New Zealand textbook was developed jointly between Roading New Zealand, Transit New Zealand (Transit), road controlling authorities and consultants. Chipsealing in New Zealand replaced Transit's 1993 Bituminous Sealing Manual. This paper highlights the major milestones between Hanson and today's state of the art chipsealing.
