Abstract

Road safety in the Province of Gelderland and the possibilities for improvement. Since the decentralisation of road safety policy, provinces and municipal regions have acquired a more important responsibility in outlining regional policy. The national road safety targets have also been translated to the regional level; regions have thus been charged with making their contribution to achieving the targets. Drawing up new road safety plans provides a good moment to look at a region's achievements and what is required to increase the possibility of being successful in reaching the targets. The Province of Gelderland has also reached this point in time. In order to feed the process with facts from scientific research, the Regional Road Safety Traffic Authority Gelderland (ROVG) asked SWOV to: 1. provide insight in the extent to which Gelderland's targets for 2010 and 2020 will be achieved under the present road safety policy; 2. if need be, make extra recommendations to achieve these targets. To begin with, this report gives an analysis of the present road safety level in Gelderland. Next, this report makes an exploration of the future situation which is based on different scenarios. The analyses as much as possible compare the Gelderland data with the Netherlands average. In a number of cases, the data has also been compared with those of comparable provinces like Noord-Brabant and Overijssel. This way a 'Gelderland profile' could be established.
