Abstract

High speed trains (HST) have a noticeable effect on the spatial development and can have an advantageous effect on regions served by the HST. Other factors are usually of greater consequences however. It seems apparent that the HST does not lead to the relocation of companies over several hundreds of kilometres, although, there do appear to be local effects that have a negative impact on locations without a HST connection. Under the influence of changes in the production process and the European unification the importance of a good HST connection may increase. Chances of relocation of companies over large distances increases in potential. The international transport prognosis justify a high speed connection from the Netherlands to Paris and London, be it that the investment is substantial and the returns on the investment will take considerable time.
