Abstract

In Northern Ireland around 310,000 children travel to and from school every day. This statistical bulletin provides information on school pupils injured in road traffic collisions whilst travelling to or from school. It gives details of the severity of their injury and their mode of travel. The data used come primarily from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) road traffic collision database. Unless stated otherwise the figures relate to school pupil casualties aged 4-18 which occurred on a weekday, over the calendar year but excluding the school summer holiday period (1st July — 30th August), between the hours of 07:01 and 19:00 in the five years 2006-2010. Main findings: • Between 2006 and 2010 five pupils aged 4-18 were killed, 86 were seriously injured and 685 were slightly injured whilst travelling to or from school. • Of the 91 pupils killed or seriously injured (KSI), 31 were aged 4-11 and 60 were aged 12-18. • In both age groups, the highest number of KSI casualties by travel mode was pedestrians (71% aged 4-11 and 73% aged 12-18). • Three female pupils and two male pupils were killed whilst travelling to or from school during 2006-2010. This represents 6% of all road traffic fatalities aged 4-18 years which occurred during this period. • Between 2006 and 2010 there was an annual average of 18 KSIs per year which were pupils aged 4-18 travelling to or from school. The equivalent figure for the 2002-2006 period was 22 KSIs per year. This represents a fall of 17%. (Author/publisher)
