Met hoogwaardig onderzoek door kundige medewerkers bijdragen aan het verder terugdringen van het aantal verkeersslachtoffers, dat is de SWOV in een notendop. Sinds 1962 levert zij door onderzoek een bijdrage aan de verkeersveiligheid in Nederland. Begin jaren zeventig vielen er circa drieduizend verkeersdoden per jaar, dat is inmiddels teruggebracht naar achthonderd. Daarmee behoort Nederland tot de meest verkeersveilige landen ter wereld. Die prestatie komt voort uit de politieke wil om verkeersveiligheid serieus te nemen. Maar ook de kennis en het vakmanschap van beleidsmakers en deskundigen om effectieve maatregelen te nemen en beleid te maken, dragen hieraan bij. Since 1962 SWOV research have made a contribution to road safety in The Netherlands. In the early 1970s there were about 3,000 road deaths a year; the number has now been reduced to about 800. This makes The Netherlands one of the safest countries in the world. That achievement is first of all the result of politicians taking the problem seriously. But the knowledge and expertise of policy makers and traffic experts that resulted in effective policy and effective measures, also made a contribution. High quality and independent research has stood at the basis.
