Abstract

In 1993, the Texas Department of Transportation began installing the first Electronic Toll and Traffic Management (ETTM) system in the United States on Houston freeways and their high-occupancy vehicle lanes. ETTM systems are a result of marrying technologies which form the basis for electronic toll collection and electronic traffic management. Automatic vehicle identification combined with freeway surveillance and control provide systems that improve existing highway efficiency without compromising safety. The success of this effort is expected to lead to wider use of ETTM systems. (A)
