Abstract

This paper details the work of the International Road Transport Union (IRU) in promoting sustainable road transport development. Priorities are road safety, energy savings and environmental protection. A reference guide has been produced of existing action programmes. Accident prevention work includes analysis of accident statistics, amendment of human behaviour and upgrading training for commercial vehicle drivers. The IRU Academy has been set up to contribute to harmonisation of training and testing road transport professionals. Transport operators need to be motivated to integrate road safety to policy and the interaction between all road users has to be considered. Recommendations are made on road infrastructure, tunnel and vehicle safety. For the covering abstract see ITRD E118917.
