Abstract

This article discusses how road user behaviour can be influenced by better highway and vehicle design. Various initiatives proposed by the United Kingdom government are presented. Research being carried out to develop highway engineering safety strategies are presented, and methods by which these can be used to improve road safety are discussed. Methods where technology can be used to assist in traffic law enforcement and also presented and discussed. These include the physical closure of roads or prevention of certain turning movements, physical speed control by humps, width constrictions for chicanes; width and length restrictions, car parking deterrents, photographic and video detection of speed and traffic light violations, and simulated policemen and police cars.
