Abstract

From an analysis of causes of fatalities, this paper briefly presents some ideas and proposals about highway equipment, vehicle and driver's behaviour. Taking into account actions and studies undertaken by ASSECAR (the safety department of the Association des Sociétés Françaises d'Autoroutes - ASFA) on the French motorway network, the paper presents some measures to be taken in such cases as: driver fatigue; close following; driving in the rain and fog; and underpumping of tyres.
