Abstract

The national regulations governing weights and dimensions of vehicles differ from each other in the countries in Europe in spite of the efforts to harmonize them. There are strong initiatives to use heavier goods vehicles in the international road traffic. On the other hand the heavier goods vehicles damage the roads and bridges mainly in developing countries in such a way that the additional road expenditures may exceed the overall savings in the costs of road transport.
