Abstract

In Sweden a speed reduction programme was run from 1986- 1988. The programme comprised five components: an initial mass media debate on the relation between speeds and safety; increased police enforcement; stricter rules regarding driving license revocation when speeding; increased speeding fines, and a nationwide information campaign aimed at working on driver attitudes to speeding. The programme was followed by studies on various aspects, i.e., campaign penetration, attitudes and attitude change, speeds, and accident statistics. The results indicate that speeds could be influenced when several measures are combined.
