Abstract

The effectiveness of passive safety devices is assessed and it is concluded that although they do protect car occupants, in reality they do not always match up the claims made for them. Safety belts are incorrectly adjusted, anchorage points positions are often unsatisfactory, head restraints show negligible benefits, axially collapsing steering columns do not provide adequate protection.
