Abstract

Both the volume and the nature of the data handled in a highway conservation contract justify more and more the use of these data, and of Information Systems which provide effective access to this information. Using an appropriately sized system is important, both from the point of view of software and hardware, given that the later determines the choice of the former. In concrete terms, this paper will deal with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) during the operation of highway conservation contracts. First, the suitability of such a system will be justified as well as the conditions justifying its use. Later, some rules are presented to the choice of hardware and software platform considering the volume of data to be stored. A standard example is developed to break down the logical architecture of the system into databases, the correlations between them, data presentation models, use of standards and their convenience, etc. (A)
