Abstract

This paper surveys safety-related research on the Intelligent Vehicle Highway System (IVHS), being conducted in the USA, and shows how it is being applied to improve road safety. Safety applications are being developed for IVHS, to display warning and control information to drivers. The following research studies are designed to improve road safety by applying advanced technology: (1) variable message signs; (2) variable speed limit systems; (3) automatic truck warning systems; (4) condition-responsive work-zone traffic control; and (5) improved systems, using environmental sensors, to warn drivers about adverse visibility, icy pavements, and cross-winds. Research has also been conducted on the in-vehicle safety advisory and warning system (IVSAWS). Market research determined system functions that users were interested in buying. Preliminary human factors studies examined types of in-vehicle message displays. Safety applications considered for IVSAWS include warnings for: (1) level crossings ahead; (2) accidents and/or congestion ahead; (3) adverse visibility ahead; (4) the approach of emergency vehicles; and (5) work zone operations.
