A literature review was made with respect to aspects of traffic signal control which may influence the decision behaviour of car drivers during the pre-red phase. The duration of the yellow phase was considered of prime importance. Several findings, based on field observations of drivers actual behaviour, indicate that a prolongation of the yellow phase by about one second (given the present 3 seconds for a 50 km/h intersection and 4 seconds for a 70 km/h intersection) may be well adapted to the drivers' needs, and thus substantially reduce the number of run red offences.
