Abstract

This paper has two aims. The first is to provide an operational definition of usability as it applies to in-vehicle ITS and to outline the importance of usability testing as part of system development. The second aim of the paper is to describe, in the form of a case study, the goals, method, and outcomes of the process that was used to test the usability of several in-car ITS technologies as part of the Australian TAC SafeCar project. The ultimate aim of the project is to stimulate demand for in-vehicle ITS technologies which are estimated to have high safety potential - initially by Victorian corporate passenger fleet car owners and, in the longer term, by car drivers in the general community.
