Abstract
Relatively little research has examined the part of drivers in pedestrian accidents. There is evidence, however, that they place the responsibility for avoiding accidents almost entirely upon the pedestrian and are ill- prepared for unpredictable pedestrian behaviour. Systems approaches to pedestrian accident research have attempted to study the interface between drivers, pedestrians, the road environment and vehicles. Information about this interface is needed for planning effective pedestrian safety programs using engineering, educational and enforcement interventions.
