The purpose of the Symposium was to explore in detail the physical and psychological aspects of the human factors involved with a view to suggesting effective methods of prevention. The Symposium discussed, first of all, the epidemiological and supplementary evidence relating human factors to risk of accident. Detailed consideration was then given to medical, psychological, physiological, cultural and sociological factors, including the effects of drugs other than alcohol. The means whereby those factors believed to increase risk of accidents could be excluded of modified, were then discussed, including procedures for driver selection, methods of improving the driver's environment, and the ways in which drivers could be educated concerning those aspects of behaviour which are dangerous in the driving situation. The latter was thought to be an important function of health education.
