Abstract

Progress in reducing accidents has been materially impeded by two problems (1) the " motivational" attitude toward the human, as opposed to the performance limitation view; and (2) the lack of human performance theory, models, and data applicable to accident causation. Two important problems in accident causation (1) the functions and limitations of warning systems; and (2) the appreciation of hazard by skilled operators, are explained.
