HVS-NORDIC (Heavy Vehicle Simulator) is a facility for accelerated pavement testing owned jointly by Finland and Sweden. The joint HVS-NORDIC research programme is being carried out to determine the lifetime of different pavement structures and maintenance methods. Results obtained by each country are available on a joint database. The mobile simulator has been operated in both countries. Ten pavement sections were tested in Finland. Pavements lasted longer than expected. Deterioration occurred as a result of rutting. The pavement structure for heavy-traffic roads had high resistance to fatigue. Steel mesh-reinforced pavements showed good resistance against cracking. Tests were conducted to examine the effects of road cross section on structural properties.
