Abstract

Bridge piers in the roadway median at highway overpass structures present a rigid object hazard to passing motorists. The hybrid crash cushion and concrete median barrier discussed here is one possible alternative to current treatments at these locations. An impact attenuator which had a compatible transition to a concrete median barrier system was designed, constructed, and tested to evaluate the feasibility of such a design.
