Abstract

This article points out why it is necessary for the state of California-where a million new vehicles are purchased each year and vehicle miles traveled will increase by nearly seventy billion per year by 2010-to expand hydrogen use. It discusses the California Hydrogen Highway Network and the California Hydrogen Blueprint Plan which lays out a phased plan for building hydrogen stations and hydrogen-powered vehicles. In the article, the author points out several concerns and pitfalls facing California and its plan. The author suggests that the California Hydrogen Blueprint Plan will require coordination between government, industry, and academia with cost burdens and risks shared among various groups.
