Abstract

"i-mode", the internet connection service for cellular phones launched in February 1999 in Japan, has gained wide acceptance from consumers due to its handy and useful nature, easy operability, reasonable charging and the wide variety of contents available. The car navigation system market in Japan is also experiencing steady growth. This paper describes the "i-mode" enabled car navigation system that is composed by the harmonisation of i-mode's business possibilities and the potential of car navigation systems as ITS application tool. This system will bring about a synergy effect and will contribute towards the development of ITS applications and the promotion of ITS business in Japan.
