Abstract

The paper first presents the existing recommendations for snow avalanche protection of Norwegian roads by use of retaining structures as earth mounds and diverting dams. The major part of the paper presents the results ofmodel experiments to investigate the retaining effects of such structures. The best effects of the structures are found when they are located high up in the run-out zone and with steep sides on the avalanche side. Finally, the transferring of the model results to nature is presented. For the covering abstract see ITRD E143097.
