EARLY INVESTIGATIONS INTO SIDE COLLISIONS WERE BASED ON ANALYSING THE PARAMETERS MEASURED ON THE STRUCK VEHICLE. THE STRIKING VEHICLE WAS USUALLY A SIMILAR MODEL TO THE VEHICLE STRUCK OR WAS SIMULATED BY A RIGID MOBILE BARRIER. SIDE COLLISIONS WITH VEHICLES OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERISTICS HAVE SHOWN THAT THE PARAMETERS OF THE STRIKING VEHICLE (STIFFNESS, DESIGN, MASS) AFFECT THE INJURY CRITERIA OF THE DUMMIES IN THE STRUCK VEHICLE. A SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE STRIKING VEHICLE AND THE INJURY CRITERIA OF THE OCCUPANTS OF THE STRUCK VEHICLE WAS CONDUCTED. A REFERENCE COLLISION BETWEEN TWO STANDARD PRODUCTION VEHICLES WAS CONDUCTED. THE COLLISION IS COMPARED WITH TESTS WHERE: THE STRIKING VEHICLE IS STIFFENED, THE MASS OF THE STRIKING VEHICLE IS INCREASED, AND THE STRIKING VEHICLE IS BRAKING. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY WERE USED TO COMPARE THE ADVANTAGES DERIVED FROM IMPROVING THE DESIGN AND STIFFNESS OF THE STRIKING VEHICLE, WITH THOSE DERIVED FROM IMPROVING THE STIFFNESS OF THE SIDE OF THE STRUCK VEHICLE AND FITTING PADDING ON THE INSIDE PANEL OF THE LATTER VEHICLE.
