Abstract

The purpose of this report is to summarize global activities on the subject of illicit drugs and driving. Identified is what is known about the scope of the problem and provided is a discussion of the current status of political, legislative, and law enforcement efforts. The study also makes recommendations for new strategic initiatives and future research. The study developed a survey to assess the current status of global legislation regarding driving under the influence of illegal drugs. The survey was sent to all International Council on Alcohol, Drugs, and Traffic Safety (ICADTS) members/affiliates in an effort to assess whether testing for alcohol and illegal drugs was permitted under current laws, the circumstance under which such testing was authorized and the logistics of the testing process. The results of the survey are analyzed and provided in the report.
