Abstract

The use of cameras to detect motorway incidents is now widely accepted by managers of road networks. This paper describes part of an automatic incident detection algorithm based on image processing. After previous work on stopped-vehicle and slow isolated vehicle detection on the motorway, we focused on detecting pedestrian presence on the motorway. This research is carried out in cooperation with Union of Toll Motorways companies (Union des Sociétés d'Autoroute à Péage) and under ISIS supervision. The function is integrated in the Tristar-AID system which is now fully operational and exploited by two French motorway operators, AREA and ESCOTA (Lyon and Nice). (Author/publisher)
